VA Boston Healthcare System
There are two types of wheelchair seating and mobility clinics offered at VA Boston: one for spinal cord injury and disease patients and the other for general medical patients. Staff work to provide the most appropriate custom seating system to meet the needs of individuals with advanced seating requirements.
Referrals for wheelchair clinic consults come from primary care providers.
The clinic's interdisciplinary team includes but is not limited to:
- a doctor
- a physical therapist
- an occupational therapist
- a prosthetics representative
- a wheelchair technician
- the patient and family/caregivers.
Many of the therapists in wheelchair clinic have advanced certification/education from a national wheelchair association to provide each individual with the best care possible.
Our team will assess the patient's need for individualized custom seating, positioning and mobility. This includes:
- lightweight manual wheelchairs
- power-assist wheelchairs
- power wheelchairs
- sports chairs
- pressure mapping
- custom molded seating for backs and cushions
- seating posture
We provide service by repairing, configuring, purchasing, and fitting of all systems.
After delivery, we will continue to work with the patient to provide long term support and service.
Correct selection of your mobility system and seating can maximize functional independence, reduce the risk of deformities, and prevent skin breakdown.
