Gastroenterology, often referred to as GI, is a medical specialty that deals with the diagnosis and treatmentTransparent rendition of the inside of a person of disorders of the digestive system. Such disorders may involve the digestive tract, pancreas, liver or gallbladder.

Gastroenterology at VA Boston Healthcare System is renowned for its excellent care and patient education. Our staff works with surgeons, radiologists and oncologists to provide expertise in a wide range of digestive ailments.


Our team of professionals serves outpatients at the Jamaica Plain campus and inpatients at West Roxbury.

ince VA Boston is the referral center for New England, we care for approximately 500 to 600 patients in our outpatient clinic each month, and perform in excess of 2500 endoscopic procedures annually. We evaluate and treat a broad range of health concerns.

Some of our services include:

Colorectal cancer (CRC) screening
Evaluation of positive fecal occult blood testing
Endoscopy: a medical procedure used to observe the inside of the body without performing major surgery. An endoscope is a long flexible tube with a lens at one end and a magnifying eyepiece at the other.
Treatments for chronic liver disease and Hepatitis C
Management of gastrointestinal problems

Gastroenterology is open Monday - Friday with appointments available through your primary care provider.

In addition, a doctor is available after hours for emergencies.

Research and Education:

Our gastroenterology staff currently is involved in a number of research investigations, including:

development and evaluation of new imaging techniques
the use of radiofrequency in treating a condition known as Barrett’s esophagus
developing new treatments for chronic hepatitis C infections

We have a long and distinguished history in the training of fellows, residents, and medical students from our affiliated academic institutions. Outpatient and inpatient settings provide wonderful learning opportunities, and GI fellows join staff members in their research.
