VA Boston Healthcare System - Amputation Specialty Program

The Amputation Specialty Program at VA Boston is a multi-disciplinary program which provides lifelong care to Veterans in VISN 1 (New England) preparing for and following amputation surgery.An lower extremity amputee walks on a treadmill

The Amputation Specialty Program includes doctors, nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists, prosthetists, recreation therapists, and other team members who provide individualized care to Veterans with limb loss. Vocational Rehabilitation, Driver Training, and Adaptive Sports programs are also available.

VA Boston Healthcare System also has a Physical Therapist/Amputation Rehabilitation Coordinator. This therapist works at all the VA Boston campuses and is available to help with lifelong Coordination of Care for Veterans with limb loss.

Special Programs include:

  • Weekly Amputation Care Clinic addresses the needs of individuals with limb loss throughout the continuum of care.

    • The clinic occurs on Wednesdays and the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of the month and is located at the West Roxbury Campus. Virtual consultation is also available.

  • Telehealth Amputation Care Clinic for Veterans who receive their primary care at other VA’s in VISN 1 (New England)

  • On site prosthetists and orthotists available

  • Monthly Amputation Support Group, the first Thursday of each month at West Roxbury Campus, from 10-11 am occurring virtually. Veterans with limb loss, as well as their family members and care givers are welcome to attend.

  • Amputation Peer Visitor Program is available to an individual before or following Amputation Surgery, and throughout the continuum of care.

  • Robust adaptive sports and recreational therapy program for Veterans with limb loss

Amputation Care Services are available at the following locations at VA Boston:

  • West Roxbury Campus: inpatient and outpatient
  • Brockton Campus: inpatient and outpatient
  • Jamaica Plain: outpatient
  • Virtually through Veterans Video Connect
