About the Program
The Medical Foster Home Program (MFH) offers a long-term care option to veterans who:
are becoming more dependent due to chronic or terminal illness,
have limited family support, and
prefer to receive care in a community family setting instead of in an institution
MFH uses a partnership among VA staff, the veteran, the veteran's family and caregivers in the community to offer a safe, supervised, family environment for veterans. In a medical foster home, the veteran will receive:
care and assistance with activities of daily living from the caregiver, 24 hours/day, 7 days/week
Home Care from a VA team, and
oversight of the home environment from the MFH Coordinator.
VA programs which oversee veterans enrolled in MFH include Spinal Cord Injury-Home Care, and Home-Based Primary Care.
