Community Residential Care Program

Since 1951, the VA's Community Residential Care Program (CRC) has provided health care supervision to eligible veterans who are not in need of acute hospital care, but because of medical and/or mental health conditions, need assistance and support to live in the community.

CRC homes are privately owned residences or group living facilities located in the community. Veterans receive:

  • 3 meals per day
  • assistance with activities of daily living as needed
  • supervision of medications
  • assistance with transportation to appointments
  • and most importantly, a home.

There are currently 24 homes involved in the CRC program in areas from Boston to the South Shore. CRC facilities must be inspected and approved by the VA prior to our veterans living there, and are inspected yearly thereafter.

Referrals & Placement

Veterans are referred the CRC Team, which screens each veteran prior to placement. We inform the sponsors of the veteran's needs (with appropriate consent) and they participate in the referral process. An effort is made to best match the veteran's needs and preferences with an available placement.

As a part of the CRC program, each veteran will receive:
  • monthly home visits by a CRC Social Worker
  • medical and psychiatric care through the VA Boston Healthcare System.
The CRC Team works to involve veterans in their recovery. CRC focuses on open communication with sponsors to ensure that the veterans' needs are being met in the most optimal living condition possible for recovery.
