Gastroenterology

Organs in digestive tract

About:

Gastroenterology, often referred to as GI, is a medical specialty that deals with the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the digestive system. Such disorders may involve the digestive tract, pancreas, liver or gallbladder.

Gastroenterology at VA Boston Healthcare System is renowned for its excellent care and patient education. Our staff works with surgeons, radiologists and oncologists to provide expertise in a wide range of digestive ailments.

Services:

Our team of professionals serves outpatients at the Jamaica Plain campus and inpatients at West Roxbury.

Since VA Boston is the referral center for New England, we care for approximately 500 to 600 patients in our outpatient clinic each month, and perform in excess of 2500 endoscopic procedures annually. We evaluate and treat a broad range of health concerns.

Some of our services include:

  • Colorectal cancer (CRC) screening
  • Evaluation of positive fecal occult blood testing
  • Endoscopy: a medical procedure used to observe the inside of the body without performing major surgery. An endoscope is a long flexible tube with a lens at one end and a magnifying eyepiece at the other.
  • Treatments for chronic liver disease and Hepatitis C
  • Management of gastrointestinal problems
